25 Celebrities Whose Lives Were Cut Short by Smoking

Cigarette smoking is much less common in the United States than it was in the middle of the 20th century, but its long-term health toll is still enormous. Tobacco use has been linked to lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, type 2 diabetes, and several other serious illnesses. Secondhand smoke can also put nonsmokers at risk, including children, infants, and adults who spend time around smokers.

For decades, smoking was everywhere in American pop culture. Movie stars held cigarettes in glamorous publicity photos. Musicians smoked onstage and backstage. Comedians, talk-show guests, and public figures were often seen with cigarettes in hand, while films and television shows frequently treated smoking as stylish, rebellious, or simply normal. At the time, the risks were not always discussed with the same urgency they are today.

This slideshow looks back at 25 famous people whose deaths were connected to smoking or smoking-related illnesses. Their stories are a reminder of how deeply cigarettes were woven into celebrity culture, and how a habit once sold as glamorous left a painful legacy for some of the most recognizable names in entertainment and public life.
