States Where COVID-19 Is the Worst Right Now

Our lengthy battle with COVID-19 continues, albeit with some shifts. The National Institutes of Health has announced that its treatment guidelines for COVID-19 will no longer be updated after August 2024. From that point onward, medical organizations like the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American College of Physicians will take over the responsibility of issuing updated information on treating the disease. Meanwhile, a Japanese pharmaceutical company is conducting trials on a new pill that could potentially be effective against both acute COVID-19 infections and long COVID.

A new study reveals that as many as 5.8 million children and young adults may be suffering from the lingering effects of infection by the virus. We’re obviously not clear of COVID yet.

But there’s no question that the situation is improving overall across the nation — though some states are still reporting considerably more COVID-related hospital admissions per capita than others.

To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo consulted data from the CDC on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of March 3-9, 2024. (Click here to compare this week’s numbers with last week’s.)
