States Where COVID-19 Is the Worst Right Now

The World Health Organization declared that the then-fledgling COVID-19 epidemic was a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on Jan. 30, 2020, upgrading it to pandemic status almost exactly four years ago, on March 11. On May 5 of 2023, WHO declared that the emergency was over, and our own Department of Health and Human Services followed suit six days later.

By that time, more than a million Americans had succumbed to the disease and many more millions had been hospitalized. According to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of March 2 of this year, the coronavirus had claimed 1,183,143 lives in this country, and there had been 6,866,673 hospitalizations, plus uncounted numbers of emergency room visits.

COVID-19 is still a threat, and still claims lives in this country, but the trends are encouraging. The CDC’s COVID Data Tracker reports that official test positivity for the week ending March 2 was down 1%, while emergency room visits diagnosed as COVID decreased 21.2% in the same period and COVID-related hospital admissions fell by 13.6%.

It’s little wonder, then, that the results of a Pew Research Center poll, released on March 7, show that only 20% of those surveyed still consider COVID to be a serious threat to their health, and only half that number fear contracting the disease and needing to be hospitalized.

While the numbers may be improving overall, some states are still suffering more from COVID than others. To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo consulted data from the CDC on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of Feb. 25-March 2, 2024. (Click here to compare this week’s numbers with last week’s.)

The same four states that recorded the most hospitalizations per 100,000 residents last week still show the highest numbers, though their order has changed somewhat. South Carolina remains in fourth place, though down slightly from 7.0 hospitalizations to 6.8. Last week’s No. 2, Delaware, is now No. 1, up from 7.3 to 7.8, with Alabama dropping from first to third place (and from 8.4 to 7.0 hospitalizations) and Hawaii inching up from third (at 7.0) to second position (at 7.2).

At the other end of the list, Wyoming continues to show the other states how it’s done, dropping from 2.4 hospital admissions per 100,000 residents last week to just 0.7 this week.

To determine the states where the COVID-19 surge is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on recent COVID-19 hospital admissions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States were ranked based on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of Feb. 25-March 2, 2024. Supplemental data on the total number of recorded COVID-19 hospital admissions since Aug. 1, 2020; the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 since January 2020; and the COVID-19 test positivity rate for the week of Feb. 25-March 2, 2024 also came from the CDC. It should be noted that this metric is widely considered to be inaccurate today, due to the closing down of many official testing centers and the fact that the results of home tests are rarely reported. Population data used to adjust hospital admission and death counts per capita came from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and is for July 1, 2022.
