States Where COVID-19 Is the Worst Right Now

New COVID variants continue to appear. JN.1, similar to BA.2.86 (also called Pirola), began spreading around the U.S. in December, and has been the fastest spreading variant in this country since then, accounting for some 86% of infections in the last two weeks of March. But that was actually guardedly good news, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that that’s down from 90% at the beginning of last month.

Clearly, there is progress being made in our continuing (if no longer top-of-mind) national struggle against this devastating virus. One of our biggest obstacles in more definitively defeating COVID-19, however, remains the wealth of misinformation now circulating around it. According to KFF Health News, a non-profit health newsroom, a flow of misleading claims about COVID, and above all the vaccines designed to prevent it or lessen its effects, have “sent fact-checkers and public health officials into overdrive.”

Over the years since the start of the pandemic, according to the newsroom, “Some people falsely asserted COVID’s symptoms were associated with 5G wireless technology. Faux cures and untested treatments populated social media and political discourse. Amid uncertainty about the virus’ origins, some people proclaimed COVID didn’t exist at all.”

KFF Health News singles out as major issues a loss of trust in vaccines, unsubstantiated claims that vaccines cause deaths or other illnesses, celebrity deaths falsely attributed to vaccines (no, Betty White, Matthew Perry, and Bob Saget were not victims of an anti-COVID shot), and “out-of-control claims about government control.”

Misinformation aside, as the weather warms up and people may be starting to spend less time in crowded indoor environments, COVID-19 hospitalization rates continued to ebb downwards, at least in some parts of the country. To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo consulted data from the CDC on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of March 24-30, 2024. The state with the most admissions in this latest time period is Hawaii, which also held that position last week. But admissions last week numbered 4.8 per 100,000, while this week they have dropped to 4.2. Last week’s state with the fewest COVID-19-related hospital admissions was Wyoming, with 0.9 per 100,000, but unfortunately its rate has risen to 1.5 this week. On the brighter side, the state that had the second fewest admissions last week, Alaska, with 1.4, has the fewest this week, setting a recent record with only 0.7 admissions per 100,000.

To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on recent COVID-19 hospital admissions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States were ranked based on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of March 24-30, 2024. Supplemental data on the total number of recorded COVID-19 hospital admissions since Aug. 1, 2020; the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 since January 2020; and the COVID-19 test positivity rate for the week of March 24-30, 2024 also came from the CDC. It should be noted that this metric is widely considered to be inaccurate today, due to the closing down of many official testing centers and the fact that the results of home tests are rarely reported. Population data used to adjust hospital admission and death counts per capita came from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and is for July 1, 2022.
