States Where COVID-19 Is the Worst Right Now

What should we be doing these days — if anything — to lessen the chances that we’ll contract COVID-19? Or if we do contract it, how can we lessen the chances that our cases will require hospitalization or even lead to death?

American society as a whole seems to have adopted a laissez-faire attitude towards the disease. Most of us apparently just aren’t too concerned about it anymore. But it clearly hasn’t gone away entirely, and it would seem to make sense to still take precautionary measures to stave it off.

The respected epidemiologist and vaccine expert Saad B. Omer wrote recently in the Los Angeles Times that we are now “under-using [vaccination] to control COVID-19 and, more importantly, reduce deaths.” As of early March, he reports, only 42% of those 60 years old or more — a group particularly susceptible to infection — and only 23% of all eligible adults had received the latest booster.

Those who get COVID can often be treated with antiviral medications such Paxlovid, but Omer also noted that many people, including pharmacists, are not aware of the fact that the drug — which is pricey in most cases — is free for those on Medicare and Medicaid or who are underinsured. He also believes that air treatment techniques, which are valuable in preventing infection, are used too seldom.

“These meat-and-potatoes approaches — vaccination, access to treatment, and clean air — may not be the most exciting tools,” he wrote. “but they reflect the best of public health: strategies that are so effective they almost invisibly reduce life-threatening illness.”

Whether it’s due to local mitigation efforts or to other factors, some states around the country clearly have had more success in fighting the virus than others. To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo consulted data from the CDC on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of March 10-16, 2024. One thing the data reveals is that things are getting better week by week. The state with the highest number of COVID-related hospital admissions last week was South Carolina, with an average of 6.2 people per 100,000 being hospitalized. This week, South Carolina is down to 4.4 admissions, and the No. 1 state (rising from 20th place last week), Nebraska, recorded only 4.8 admissions.

Methodology

To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on recent COVID-19 hospital admissions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States were ranked based on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of March 10-16, 2024. Supplemental data on the total number of recorded COVID-19 hospital admissions since Aug. 1, 2020; the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 since January 2020; and the COVID-19 test positivity rate for the week of March 10-16, 2024 also came from the CDC. It should be noted that this metric is widely considered to be inaccurate today, due to the closing down of many official testing centers and the fact that the results of home tests are rarely reported. Population data used to adjust hospital admission and death counts per capita came from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and is for July 1, 2022.
