These States Face the Worst COVID-19 Hospitalizations Right Now

The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global health emergency on January 30, 2020, and classified it as a pandemic on March 11 of the same year. After over three years, on May 5, 2023, the WHO announced that the COVID-19 emergency had ended, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services followed suit six days later.

By that time, the coronavirus had claimed more than a million lives in the United States, with millions more hospitalized. As of March 2, 2024, the CDC reported 1,183,143 COVID-19 deaths and 6,866,673 hospitalizations in the country.

While COVID-19 remains a threat and continues to cause fatalities, recent trends are encouraging. The CDC’s data for the week ending March 2 showed a 1% decrease in positive tests, a 21.2% drop in COVID-related emergency room visits, and a 13.6% decline in COVID hospitalizations.

A recent Pew Research Center poll revealed that only 20% of respondents consider COVID-19 a serious health risk, and just 10% fear contracting the disease and requiring hospitalization.

However, some states are still experiencing higher COVID-19 hospitalization rates than others. To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo consulted data from the CDC on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of Feb. 25-March 2, 2024. According to CDC data for the week of February 25-March 2, 2024, Delaware had the highest rate of new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 residents (7.8), followed by Hawaii (7.2), Alabama (7.0), and South Carolina (6.8). In contrast, Wyoming had the lowest rate, with only 0.7 new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 residents during the same period.
