States Where COVID-19 Is the Worst Right Now

Good news, bad news: According to a statement issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overall hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the last week of April were the lowest they have been since the beginning of the pandemic, with a total of just 5,615 reported nationwide. But researchers studying wastewater for signs of the virus have found a new group of variants, known as FLiRT (the name comes from letters found in the technical names for the viral mutations), which they fear might ignite another flare-up this summer.

New variants spring up and spread with alarming alacrity. Currently, about 75% of current COVID cases in the U.S. are from the JN.1 mutation, which was virtually non-existent here as recently as last November. Last month, JN.1 accounted for almost all the cases recorded in this country — but already, according to the CDC, one FLiRT variant, dubbed KP.2, is responsible for about one in four infections.

The CDC and other health agencies continue to advise that the single most important thing people can do to avoid the disease, or at least its more serious manifestations, is to get vaccinated. Currently, however, only about 22% of the eligible population has received the latest COVID shot, released last fall — and a Harvard University study suggests that, in any case, that shot might not be particularly effective against the FLiRT variants. A warm-weather surge, then, might be in the offing.

For now, however, the situation doesn’t look bad at all — though the rate of hospitalizations for COVID varies from state to state. To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo consulted data from the CDC on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of April 14-20, 2024. The states with the most and fewest COVID hospitalizations are the same this week as they were last week. The No. 1 state remains Hawaii, which repeats its rate of 4.0 hospitalizations per 100,000 residents from last week. No. 50 is still Alaska, which has fallen from 1.0 hospitalizations to 0.3.

To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on recent COVID-19 hospital admissions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States were ranked based on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of April 14-20, 2024. Supplemental data on the total number of recorded COVID-19 hospital admissions since Aug. 1, 2020; the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 since January 2020; and the COVID-19 test positivity rate for the week of April 14-20, 2024 also came from the CDC. It should be noted that this metric is widely considered to be inaccurate today, due to the closing down of many official testing centers and the fact that the results of home tests are rarely reported. Population data used to adjust hospital admission and death counts per capita came from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and is for July 1, 2022.
