States Where the COVID-19 Surge Is the Worst Right Now

Weekly hospital admissions for COVID-19 are following a similar pattern as last year, when admissions spiked during the colder months. Admissions are surging as the colder weather forces people to spend more time inside and accelerates the spread of the virus. Admissions reached the highest level in almost a year for the week ending Dec. 30, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Test positivity also rose.

To determine the states where the COVID-19 surge is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on recent COVID-19 hospital admissions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States were ranked based on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of Dec. 24-30, 2023. Supplemental data on the total number of recorded COVID-19 hospital admissions since Aug. 1, 2020; the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 since January 2020; and the COVID-19 test positivity rate for the week of Dec. 24-30, 2023 also came from the CDC. Population data used to adjust hospital admission and death counts per capita came from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and is for July 1, 2022.

The seven-day moving average of hospital admissions across the country increased 20.4% to 34,798 for the reporting period ending Dec. 30 from the previous week, the highest weekly total since Jan. 14. Admissions for the corresponding week a year prior were about 10,000 higher. Test positivity was 12.4%, up from 11.7% a week prior.

Hospital systems in New York City, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, North Carolina, and Wisconsin have imposed mask mandates in response to the uptick in hospital admissions.

The JN.1 variant of COVID-19 accounts for between 54.9% and 67.9% of COVID cases in the U.S., according to the CDC. Health officials say the illness caused by this variant doesn’t appear to be any more virulent than previous COVID variants.

Deaths due to COVID-19 rose 12.5% from the prior week and accounted for 3.6% of all fatalities in the United States for the Dec. 24-30 period, according to CDC data. There have been 1,165,118 total deaths from the pandemic in the U.S. since the onset of the coronavirus in early 2020. (This is a list of the 10 of the most famous people who died from COVID-19.)

Hospital admissions due to COVID-19 surged in West Virginia, which led the nation in that category for the seventh straight week at 19.3 per 100,000 state residents for the week of Dec. 24-30, 2023. That’s almost three points higher than the prior reporting period. The 10 highest states were all higher than the corresponding 10 states from a week earlier. 

Washington and Alaska shared the lowest admissions rate of 4.6, which was about 2 points higher than the lowest admissions rate posted by Alaska the previous week. The 10 states with lowest admissions rates were higher than the 10 lowest states the previous week.

Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa topped the country in test positivity rate for the eighth consecutive week at 17.8, a half-point below the highest level a week prior. As has been the case in previous weeks, the Midwest states accounted for the remainder of the 10 states with high test positivity.

The states with the lowest test positivity are in the West and the South. Hawaii, Nevada, California, and Arizona had the lowest test positivity at 8.0.
