States Where COVID-19 Is the Worst Right Now

Weekly hospital admissions for COVID-19 are following a similar seasonal pattern as last year, when admissions spiked during the colder winter months. Admissions are surging again this year as the colder weather forces people indoors, accelerating the spread of the virus. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, admissions reached the highest level in almost a year for the week ending Dec. 30. Test positivity rates also rose over the same period, reflecting the virus’s escalating spread.

To determine the states where the COVID-19 surge is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on recent COVID-19 hospital admissions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States were ranked based on the number of new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 per 100,000 state residents for the week of Dec. 24-30, 2023. 

The seven-day moving average of hospital admissions across the country increased 20.4% to 34,798 for the week ending Dec. 30 compared to the previous week. This is the highest weekly total since Jan. 14. However, admissions for the same week a year prior were about 10,000 higher. Test positivity rose to 12.4%, up from 11.7% the week before, indicating the virus’s escalating spread.

In response to the uptick in hospitalizations, major hospital systems in New York City, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, North Carolina, and Wisconsin have reimposed indoor mask mandates.

According to CDC data, the Omicron variant accounts for between 54.9% and 67.9% of current COVID-19 cases in the U.S. However, health officials say the illness caused by this variant does not appear more severe than previous variants.

Deaths due to COVID-19 rose 12.5% from the prior week and accounted for 3.6% of all fatalities in the United States for the Dec. 24-30 period, according to CDC data. There have been 1,165,118 total deaths from the pandemic in the U.S. since the onset of the coronavirus in early 2020. (This is a list of the 10 of the most famous people who died from COVID-19.)

Hospital admissions due to COVID-19 continued to surge in West Virginia, which led the nation in that category for the seventh consecutive week. West Virginia had 19.3 COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 state residents for the week of Dec. 24-30, 2023 – nearly three points higher than the prior week’s rate. Notably, the top 10 states with the highest admission rates were all higher compared to the top 10 states from the previous reporting period, underscoring the escalating hospitalization trends across the country.
