For decades, the idea of collaborations between competing fashion brands seemed an unthinkable notion. While some anomalous partnerships sprung up over the 20th century (such as Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dalí), the idea of collaboration remained confined mostly to only slightly acknowledged inspiration, such as Yves Saint Laurent's 1965 Autumn/Winter Collection that took flavor from the painting of Piet Mondrian.

As the new millennium dawned, something changed. Suddenly, every fashion brand sought increasingly diverse and unexpected collaborations to give their clothing lines the added boost. While many designers have embarked on collaborations, some remain the cream of the crop, serving as the most innovative designer collabs that redefined style.

Nowadays, it seems that fashion brands team up with increasing abandon. This happens to such an extent that many brands are guilty of pushing collaborations more than their own clothing lines. While it remains a lucrative strategy, infusing cash for whatever forces team up, the idea of fashion collaborations came from somewhere. Starting in the early 2000s with Karl Lagerfeld's then-unheard-of partnership with H&M, fashion collaborations became increasingly en-vogue, resulting in a diverse array of design partnerships. While some fail to hit the mark, other innovative designer collabs redefined style. In this article, we will explore 17 of the best design partnerships.(For other great style partnerships, discover 12 of the best fashion designer collaborations.)

To compile a list of 17 innovative designer collabs that redefined style, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of lifestyle, fashion, and art publications including Vogue Magazine, Fashion Innovation, and Artland Magazine. Next, we selected designer collaborations that marked a profound shift in fashion styles, approaches, and strategies. After that, we confirmed aspects of the collaborations using sites like The Dali and Rebag.org.
