10 Once-Mocked ’80s Trends Making a Comeback

Few decades have been mocked for their fashion quite like the 1980s. Shoulder pads were wide enough to challenge doorframes, neon colors appeared on everything, and outfits were often completed with leg warmers, oversized belts, teased hair, and enough accessories to fill an entire drawer. Looking back, some of those styles can seem outrageous. At the time, however, they were bold, modern, and impossible to ignore.

Despite the decade’s reputation for excess, designers and younger shoppers are once again turning to the 1980s for inspiration. Fashion tends to move in cycles, with forgotten styles often returning 20 to 40 years after they first peaked. By then, the generation that considered them embarrassing has moved on, while a younger one sees them as fresh, playful, and completely new.
