Waterfront destinations, from lakes to rivers to oceans, are a huge draw for many people, who often appreciate relaxing in these areas and enjoying all that waterfront living can bring. Lake areas, and lake towns in particular, can offer residents and visitors alike a multitude of outdoor activities, like walking on nature trails and wildlife watching, as well as seasonal activities like swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, ice skating, and ice fishing.
Relocating to these beautiful lake towns is often an ideal, but not all areas are affordable. But the United States has more than 100,000 lakes, which gives plenty of opportunities to find a lake town that's best for you and your budget. And this affordable picturesque lake town might just be the place to call home.
The most affordable lake towns span the U.S. from East to West, North to South. Whether you prefer Maine living and quaint New England charm or the Great Plains of South Dakota, there is bound to be something. Some of the best lakes in the U.S. are even part of national parks. (Check out the 11 best national parks to visit in good weather.)
Methodology:
To determine the most affordable lake towns, 24/7 Tempo reviewed five-year data on median household value and median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Survey. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the ratio of median home value to median household income. Only places with at least 2,500 residents near lakes of at least one square mile in area were considered. Boundary definitions for places came from the U.S. Census Bureau, while boundary definitions for lakes came from Esri.
