Craft Services 101: Here's What Celebrities Actually Eat on Set
Have you ever heard of a craft service? Although the name sounds like it suggests something to do with a creative craft like sewing, this isn't the case. Actually, a craft service is the department in the entertainment industry (TV, film, and video) that provides crew and cast with food and drinks.
Why is this necessary? Well, think about it. In large movie and TV productions, they sometimes have hundreds, if not thousands, of extras. While it varies, most of the time, extras get fed for filming. The same goes for the main stars, and everyone's diet varies!
It's an interesting world, one we dove right into and researched for you. Ready to learn about the secrets behind craft services and what celebrities prefer to eat on set? Click through the slideshow. For this slideshow, we used sources like Reddit and Quora to see what ex-employees and cast members remember eating. We also used Backstage as a source.
What Do Craft Services Provide?
So, what exactly does a craft service provide? While it varies from production and craft service companies, there are a few staples most craft services provide.
Beverages
One of the main things a craft service in the entertainment industry provides cast members is beverages. Some of the more common things they bring are bottled water (still or sparkling), juice, coffee, hot teas, and sodas.
Chips
Another item they may provide as snacks is chips. The brand and type depend on the client's interest and order.
Fruits
Although craft services can provide large meals, they usually just stick to snacks in between catering. This includes delicious cut-up fruits.
Pastries
What else would you enjoy with coffee other than some sweet pastries? On a craft table, you're likely to find all sorts of tasty treats, including muffins, cookies, danishes, croissants, and bread.
Granola/Protein Bars
Granola and protein bars are quick and tasty, giving cast a perfect pick-me-up in between shots.
Nuts
On the same wavelength, craft services may also provide nuts like peanuts, cashews, and walnuts. This, of course, depends as some cast members may have allergies.
Small Meals
Catering companies usually handle the larger meals like lunch and dinner. However, craft services can provide small/mini meals like salads, sandwiches, and crackers with dips.
