Janet Jackson and Other Best-Selling Female Artists

Janet Jackson and Other Best-Selling Female Artists

The AMAs are in full swing, but do you know much about the female nominees this year?

The music industry has always been, and remains, a male-dominated industry. This is illustrated each year by the distribution of award nominees by gender at the Grammy Awards, where the vast majority of nominees in every category are overwhelmingly male. Yet, there is no denying the brilliance of female artists and many are behind the best-selling albums in music history.

To determine the female artists behind the best-selling albums in music history, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on historical chart performance from the Billboard 200. Albums were ranked based on an inverse scoring system wherein a week at No. 1 is worth 200 points, a week at No. 2 worth 199 points, and so on, up to a week at No. 200 worth one point. Only studio albums were considered. Chart data is current through June 1, 2024.

This post was updated May 27, 2025 to reflect additional information.
