Ancient Figures Once Dismissed as Legends Until Archaeology Found Evidence

Much of ancient history survives through stories preserved in religious texts, royal records, and manuscripts copied across generations. For some rulers, priests, governors, and military leaders, those written accounts were once the only indication that they had ever existed. Without physical evidence, historians were left to debate whether these figures were real people or legendary characters shaped by tradition.

Archaeology has helped resolve many of those questions. Inscriptions, monuments, seals, coins, and tombs have provided tangible evidence for individuals once known only through ancient texts. In this 24/7 Tempo feature, we look at notable figures who were long treated as myths or historical mysteries before archaeological discoveries strengthened the case that they were real.
