For centuries, great works of art have inspired admiration, curiosity, and debate. But some masterpieces have also become targets for vandals seeking to draw attention to political or social causes.

One of the earliest well-known cases occurred in 1913, when suffragette Mary Richardson slashed Velázquez's Rokeby Venus to protest the treatment of activist Emmeline Pankhurst. Since then, artworks in museums around the world have occasionally been damaged by activists trying to highlight issues such as war, climate change, or social justice.

Although many of these works have been carefully restored, repairs can take years and sometimes leave permanent marks on cultural history. Here are times vandals damaged priceless works of art.
