Military Deceptions That Changed the Course of History

War has never been decided by firepower alone. Some of history’s most consequential military victories depended on deception: false retreats, fake armies, misleading radio traffic, surprise landings, hidden troop movements, and carefully planted misinformation. From ancient battlefields to World War II and beyond, commanders have used deception to confuse enemies, protect their own forces, and create advantages that would not have existed through strength alone.

24/7 Tempo looks at military deceptions and destructive strategies that changed history. These examples show how psychological warfare and planning can alter the outcome of a battle or campaign, sometimes before the fighting even begins. The idea is old: The Art of War, traditionally attributed to Sun Tzu, has long emphasized the importance of strategy, misdirection, and defeating an opponent without unnecessary waste.

To compile this list, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical and educational sources, including Britannica, Smithsonian Magazine, History, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the National WWII Museum. The list is not meant to cover every example of military deception, but it highlights some of the most famous, influential, and revealing cases of how strategy has shaped warfare across time.

Despite their eventual defeat, the Nazis’ Blitzkrieg strategy enabled them to conquer and maintain control of large parts of Europe for at least two years, leaving a profound psychological impact even in regions they didn’t occupy. Regarded as a significant development in military tactics, Blitzkrieg is credited with influencing American military doctrine well into modern times.
