25 Weapons So Inhumane They Were Outlawed in War

Throughout history, militaries have developed increasingly powerful weapons to gain an advantage on the battlefield. But some innovations proved so destructive, indiscriminate, or inhumane that nations around the world eventually agreed they should never be used again.

From chemical agents and biological weapons to certain explosive devices, these tools of war sparked international outrage and led to treaties designed to ban them outright. Agreements such as the Hague Conventions, the Biological Weapons Convention, and the Chemical Weapons Convention were created to prevent the use of the most devastating technologies ever developed.

To identify weapons that were eventually banned from warfare, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical and military sources. Each entry includes additional details such as the country of origin, first major use, the weapon's primary effect, and why it was ultimately considered unacceptable on the battlefield.

Here are weapons so destructive they were eventually banned from war.
