20 Video Game Endings Players Still Talk About Today

A great video game ending can turn a good game into one players remember for the rest of their lives. Long before modern games started chasing movie-level storytelling, players were already waiting for that final screen, last boss, secret reveal, or closing image that made the entire journey feel worth it.

Even in the NES era and on early home computers, finishing a difficult game felt like a major accomplishment. Developers used those final moments to reward players with surprise reveals, memorable sendoffs, and small details that became legendary over time. Moments like discovering Samus’ true identity in Metroid, escaping the chaos of Contra, or watching Dracula’s castle collapse in Castlevania proved that even simple graphics could leave a lasting impression.

As games became more advanced, their endings became bigger, bolder, and more emotional. Modern video games can now deliver the kind of character arcs, twists, sacrifices, and final choices once associated mostly with films and novels. The difference is that players are not just watching the story unfold. They are guiding the character through every victory, mistake, and loss.

That connection can make the ending hit harder than almost any other medium. After spending dozens or even hundreds of hours inside a game’s world, the final moments can feel personal. The games on this list delivered endings that shocked players, moved them, rewarded them, or simply gave them a finale they still talk about years later.

MAJOR spoilers ahead for each of the games on this list!
