10 R-Rated Movies You Might Not Know Disney Released

Disney and R-rated movies might seem like an odd combination. After all, the company built its reputation on animated classics and family-friendly entertainment. But Disney's movie business has always gone well beyond the films featuring that familiar castle logo.

Starting in the 1980s, Disney used labels like Touchstone Pictures and later Hollywood Pictures to release films aimed at older audiences. That opened the door to adult comedies, crime dramas, psychological thrillers, and plenty of movies you probably wouldn't associate with Disney.

Some became box-office hits, while others earned cult followings or quietly slipped into obscurity. Either way, these 10 R-rated movies show a very different side of Disney's history, one the company doesn't exactly advertise alongside Mickey Mouse.

Down and Out in Beverly Hills deserves a special place in Disney history. The Touchstone comedy starring Nick Nolte, Richard Dreyfuss, and Bette Midler became the first R-rated movie released by Disney. The story follows a wealthy but deeply dysfunctional Beverly Hills family whose lives are upended after they take in a homeless man. The movie was both a critical and commercial success, proving that Disney could reach adult audiences without putting its family-oriented name directly on the film.

One of the biggest hits on this list, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle stars Rebecca De Mornay as a woman who infiltrates another family's home by posing as their nanny as part of an elaborate revenge plot. The psychological thriller was produced by Disney's Hollywood Pictures label and became a major box-office success, earning more than $87 million domestically. Critics were generally positive as well, making this one of the clearest examples of why the original "failed to win over fans" angle did not quite fit.

Spike Lee's Summer of Sam is set against the fear surrounding David Berkowitz's Son of Sam killings in New York City during the summer of 1977. Rather than making Berkowitz the central character, Lee focuses largely on residents of a Bronx neighborhood as paranoia, suspicion, violence, and personal conflicts begin tearing relationships apart. The 1999 Touchstone release earned mixed reviews, with critics divided over its sprawling approach, but there is nothing remotely family-friendly about this dark chapter of Disney's film catalog.

Bette Midler and Shelley Long star as two aspiring actresses who cannot stand each other, only to discover they have been dating the same man. When he apparently dies, the pair set out to learn what happened and stumble into a much bigger conspiracy involving spies and deception. Released through Touchstone Pictures, Outrageous Fortune mixes buddy comedy, action, and farce in a way that feels far removed from the Disney movies most audiences associate with the company.

Steve Martin adapted Shopgirl from his own novella and co-stars alongside Claire Danes and Jason Schwartzman. Danes plays Mirabelle, a struggling artist working behind a department-store glove counter in Beverly Hills whose quiet life becomes complicated by two very different romantic relationships. Released as a Touchstone Picture, the R-rated romantic drama received generally mixed-to-positive reviews and is a much more subdued, adult-oriented movie than audiences might expect to find in Disney's catalog.

Written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, Mumford follows a newcomer who arrives in a small town and begins working as a psychologist despite hiding a major secret about his own past. His unusual approach quickly makes him popular with patients, even as questions about who he really is begin piling up. The Touchstone comedy-drama received mixed reviews and made only a modest theatrical impact, but its quirky cast and unusual premise have helped it retain a small following.

The Program takes viewers inside a fictional major college football program where winning can matter more than almost anything else. James Caan plays the head coach, while Craig Sheffer, Omar Epps, Halle Berry, and Kristy Swanson are among the ensemble cast. Critics were not especially impressed by its familiar sports-movie storylines, but audiences have been considerably kinder to it over time. The R-rated Touchstone drama has developed a lasting following among football movie fans.

Paul Newman plays colorful Louisiana Gov. Earl Long in Blaze, a loosely biographical story centered on Long's relationship with burlesque performer Blaze Starr, played by Lolita Davidovich. The movie mixes romance, political satire, and drama while touching on Long's fight over Black voting rights in Louisiana. It was another R-rated Touchstone production, and while it never became one of Newman's best-known films, critics were considerably warmer toward it than the original version of this list suggested.

Directed by brothers Albert and Allen Hughes, Dead Presidents follows Anthony Curtis, a young Bronx man who serves in Vietnam and returns home to a life that is far harder than he expected. Financial desperation eventually pushes Anthony and several friends toward a dangerous robbery. Released by Hollywood Pictures, the film divided critics, but audiences have responded much more positively over the years. Its combination of war drama, social commentary, and crime makes it one of Disney's more unexpected R-rated releases.

Cate Blanchett stars as Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, whose reporting investigated Dublin's criminal underworld and drug trade before she was murdered in 1996. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced drama was released through Touchstone Pictures and focuses on Guerin's increasingly dangerous efforts to identify and expose powerful criminals. Reviews were mixed, although Blanchett's performance received considerable praise. Its grim real-life subject matter makes it another surprising entry under the broader Disney umbrella.
