Disney is one of the most popular entertainment companies in the world known for their many offerings in the field of movies, theme parks, television, and more as well as its characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Chip and Dale. What all of these have in common is their ability to make people both young and old, happy. One can't help but smile when watching kid-friendly films that have become synonymous with Disney. (Another popular company is Stanley, which has partnered with LoveShackFancy on a limited edition line of tumblers.)

Since the media giant's first film was released in 1937, the animated classic, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," audiences have been entertained with mostly light-hearted fare and have enjoyed a long history of movies that families can enjoy together. But Disney doesn't just offer animated features and musicals. They have an extensive list of many other films, including R-rated films.

Many overlook Disney's first R-rated movie, the 1986 release, "Down and Out in Beverly Hills", starring singer-actress Bette Midler who had signed on for a six-movie deal with Disney. This film was the first of those releases and the first R-rated Disney movie. The film centered on an affluent family in Beverly Hills who decided to house a homeless man (it also starred Richard Dreyfuss and Nick Nolte).

Once upon a time, The Walt Disney Company would release PG-13 and R-rated films under their production label, Touchstone Films founded in 1984 by the "House of Mouse". Through Touchstone, dozens of R-rated movies hit theaters and with the first R-rated Disney film, "Down and Out in Beverly Hills," getting solid reviews, Disney's venture proved successful. (The movie received two Golden Globe nominations ("Best Motion Picture" and "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture").

That set the gears in motion for Disney to keep releasing movies for an older audience through its Touchstone production company. A quick name change to Touchstone Pictures occurred before releasing the next R-rated movie, "Ruthless People." The themes in these movies range from war to crime and living life to the fullest to supernatural events.(Speaking of movies to watch again, find inspiration in these movies we love to watch over and over again.)

To determine the greatest R-rated Disney movies ever made, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of April 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only R-rated movies produced or distributed by Disney or one of its subsidiaries (like Touchstone Pictures) were considered.

Here are the top R-rated Disney movies ever made:
