Most of us love adventure. The thrill of exploring new lands, and seeing regions you have only read about. Going on exciting journeys that take you outside of your comfort zone to experience breathtaking excursions can often be a dream that many of us can only encounter through others, or film. This is perhaps why adventure films have always been popular – they take people to places they might not experience.

The allure of adventure films is the journey they take you on. You find yourself swept up in a fantasy that makes you forget the real world if only for a few hours, becoming engulfed in epic storytelling. These timeless films include battles and chases and grounding themes that appeal to people of all generations. This film genre persistently presents a distinct moral framework, lending to a simplicity you find comforting. (If you like classics, check out these John Wayne movies with that gave us classic quotes.)

To determine the most iconic classic adventure films in history, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of May 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies released before 1980 with at least 1,000 reviews on IMDb were considered, and documentaries were not excluded. Cast information is from IMDb.
