There was a time when Pirate movies did very well. During Hollywood's Golden Age, films like "Captain Blood" and "The Sea Hawk", both featuring one of the top stars of the time, Errol Flynn, were hugely successful. Even as recently as 2003, the genre featured films in a franchise that were some of the highest-grossing films in U.S. history. "The Curse of the Black Pearl" from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise grossed 305.4 million in the United States alone. With more than 90 years of films to choose from, these are the greatest pirate movies ever made.

Great pirate movies share many similarities – swashbuckling pirates, treasure hunters, and brave sailors. They are all thrown together with thrilling action sequences, adventure, stunts, special effects, and perhaps a mythical creature or two popping up to cause some problems. Of course, it wouldn't be a pirate movie without an epic romance and shocking betrayals.

To determine the greatest pirate movies ever made, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of May 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies with at least 1,000 reviews on IMDb were considered, and documentaries were not excluded. Cast information is from IMDb.
