40 of the Best Mob Movies Ever Made, According to the Numbers

Few movie genres are as instantly recognizable as the Mafia film. From backroom deals and brutal power struggles to family loyalty, betrayal, and dark humor, these movies pull audiences into a secretive world where trust can be dangerous and ambition often comes at a steep price. Some are sprawling crime epics, while others find comedy in mob life, but the best have produced some of the most memorable characters and scenes in movie history.

This list ranks 40 of the greatest Mafia movies ever made, focusing on films centered on organized crime in Italy or the United States. Ratings from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes were used to help determine the rankings, with audience and critic scores given equal weight. The result includes everything from celebrated classics to comedies and lesser-known crime films that earned unusually strong reviews.

Naturally, Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather films are represented, but Mafia movies go far beyond the Corleone family. Michelle Pfeiffer brings a completely different energy to Married to the Mob, while Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal turn the genre on its head in Analyze This. Together with decades of gangster dramas, these films show just how many different ways Hollywood has explored life inside, and around, organized crime.
