What’s your ideal temperature outside? Coming off a week of oppressive heat, I find myself longing to be in one of the cities with the nicest year-round weather. Imagine warm, comfortable temperatures every day of the year. Across the U.S., millions of Americans became trapped under a heat dome that had temperatures soaring to record-shattering levels. Baltimore and Washington, D.C. reached 100ºF for the first time in over a decade.

Parts of California have been in the 90ºF to 100ºF range for weeks. In my area of Vermont, the hot weather topped Miami, Florida, by 10ºF. It was tough to take as I’d gotten up just a few mornings earlier and it was 40ºF. Sudden temperature swings are tough when it comes to getting your body acclimated. Moving to a city where temperatures don’t deviate as much from a more ideal daily temperature seems like a dream come true.

Everyone sweltering in the heat has a heat dome to blame. It’s a long-lasting area of high pressure that leads to heat waves because the pressure pushes the rising hot air back down. NASA shared several images of the spread of heat across sections of the U.S. So many states were trapped in it.

For now, some in the Northeast are of the heat, and it’s been raining for days. Vermont also had a tornado watch in the middle of the thunderstorms. A long-running heatwave isn’t the only weather event people need to prepare for. (Also get ready for hurricane season as it kicks off by reading “Hurricane Preparation Tips You Need to Know This Season.”)

To determine the cities with the nicest year-round weather, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical temperature data from the National Centers for Environmental Information of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Cities within the contiguous United States were ranked based on the average deviation from the ideal 66°F daily temperature in the spring, summer, fall, and winter months from 2019 to 2023. Average spring temperature is the historical average for March, April, and May, while average summer temperature is the historical average for June, July, and August, average fall temperature the historical average of September, October, and November, average winter temperature the historical average of December, January, and February.

The average deviation from 66°F in each season was normalized using min-max normalization across 378 metro areas. Data was aggregated from the county level to metropolitan statistical areas using boundary definitions from the U.S. Census Bureau for July 2023.
