Cities Across the U.S. Where Summer Heat Is on the Rise

Cities Across the U.S. Where Summer Heat Is on the Rise

The world experienced the hottest summer in history in 2024, with record highs set across all regions. According to the National Oceanic and Atmoshpheric Administration (NOAA), August saw temperatures rise 2.29 degrees F above normal, and is the 15th consecutive month of record-high temperatures across the globe. Thanks to these rising climates, varies cities across the U.S. are feeling the heat.

Rising temperatures have a serious effect not just on the environment, with increased risk of wildfires, drought, air pollution, an impact to agriculure and more, but it also is a significant risk to the population and can lead to heatstroke, dizziness, fainting, difficulty breathing, and in extreme cases, death. Heat exposure has had catastrophic results in the U.S. Between 1979 and 2022, a total of 14,000 deaths have been attributed to excessive heat.

To determine cities across the U.S. where summer heat is on the rise, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical temperature data from the National Centers for Environmental Information of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Metropolitan statistical areas were ranked based on the difference in average maximum temperature during June, July, and August of 2019 through 2023 from the average maximum temperature during June, July, and August of 1901 through 2000.

Data was aggregated from the county to the metropolitan level using boundary definitions from the U.S. Census Bureau. Data on population is from the Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey and are five-year estimates. (Also read The Average Summer Temperature Every Decade Since 1895.)
