There is clear and unmistakable evidence that Earth is warming at an unprecedented rate, according to NASA Science, which has led to extreme heat in many regions. The current warming trend that regions across the globe have been encountering is in large part due to human activity; greenhouse gases, mainly from fossil fuels, methane, and nitrous oxide to name a few, are causing significant changes in the oceans, atmosphere, and more. This extreme heat has had catastrophic effects on everyone and everything.
Per NOAA, 2024 was the hottest year on record in the Northern Hemisphere, with the average global land and ocean surface temperature 2.29 degrees Fahrenheit more than the 20th-century average. And August maintained a 15-month streak of record-high temperatures. Some states and counties on the East Coast are experiencing heat waves unlike anything seen in prior years.
To determine the East Coast counties experiencing the worst heat waves right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on daily average temperature from the NOAA's nClimGrid-Daily program. Counties were ranked based on the raw differential in average daily temperature from the period July 1-6, 1981-2010 to July 16, 2024. Supplemental data on population is from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Survey.
