1. Yuengling Lord Chesterfield Ale

Not only is beer the most popular alcoholic beverage in the United States, but it is the top choice around the globe and one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in history. Beer-like beverages have probably been around since ancient times. It is thought that the earliest known beer was brewed in the Godin Tepe settlement, in what is now Iran,  in 10,000 BCE. But there is solid proof that by 4,000 BCE Mesopotamia, Sumerians were imbibing beer. By 3,000 B.C., it was present in Europe, and over the centuries, Germany became especially known for its master brewers.

To determine the oldest beer in the U.S., 24/7 Tempo reviewed information from media sources and breweries themselves. The Dutch were the first to bring commercial brewing to America. and the first recorded beer brewed on American soil dates back to 1587, with the first brewery popping up in 1632. However, the oldest continuously operating brewery in America dates back only to the 1800s. That brewery is Yuengling in Pennsylvania, and its Lord Chesterfield Ale is America’s oldest beer.

According to a 2023 Gallup poll, more than six in ten Americans drink beer, with 37% of drinkers most often opting for a cold brew. While it may be said that nearly as many people in America drink beer as those who drink water, that is something of an exaggeration. The National Beer Wholesalers Association claims that adults in the United States consumed over 26.1 gallons of beer and cider in 2020. The beer industry shipped 205 million barrels.

The oldest beers in the U.S. originated in a handful of states, with Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri home to several of them. In some states, whether it is because of climate or the culture, beer consumption is far higher than in others. (Also See This Is the Drunkest City in the US: Ranking America’s Top 50.)
