The History of the Oldest Beers Brewed in the US

Beer is not only the most popular alcoholic beverage in the United States but also a top choice worldwide. Beer-like drinks likely originated in ancient times, with evidence pointing to brewing activities as early as 10,000 BCE in the Godin Tepe settlement in present-day Iran. By 4,000 BCE, the Sumerians in Mesopotamia were already enjoying beer. Its popularity reached Europe by 3,000 BCE, with Germany earning recognition for its expert brewers in the centuries that followed.

To determine the oldest beers in the U.S., 24/7 Tempo analyzed information from media sources and breweries themselves. Dutch settlers pioneered commercial brewing in the U.S., and records indicate the first documented instance of beer brewing on American soil in 1587, with the establishment of the inaugural brewery in 1632. However, the distinction of being the oldest continually operating brewery in the country belongs to Yuengling, founded in Pennsylvania during the 1800s, with its Lord Chesterfield Ale recognized as America’s oldest beer.

The oldest beers in the U.S. originated in a handful of states, with Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri home to several of them. In some states, whether it is because of climate or the culture, beer consumption is far higher than in others. (Also See This Is the Drunkest City in the US: Ranking America’s Top 50.)
