These 15 Movie Sets Were So Cursed, Cast Members Refused to Return
Do you believe in curses or paranormal spirits? If you do, you aren't alone. According to the Pew Research Center, about 30% of adults in the U.S. believe in magic, spells, and curses. Worldwide, this number varies a lot. The same survey, for instance, found that 87% of Ghanians believe, and only 20% of Swedes.
Regardless of what you believe in, it's still unsettling to experience something you can't explain right away. It's even more bizarre when horrendous coincidences pile up.
Curses and hauntings are things we see in horror movies, but some of the horror movies might have some truth to them. Quite a few of the best horror and thriller films have some creepy events that are too hard to explain; they might as well be curses or hauntings. So, which films? And what do the cast/crew remember seeing? Click through the slideshow to find out. For this slideshow, 24/7 Tempo consulted various entertainment websites, specifically searching for actors, directors, and crew member interviews/comments.
"The Exorcist" (1973)
One of the most cursed and haunted movie sets was "The Exorcist." Cast and crew who worked on this freaky horror film aren't quiet about their supernatural experiences. They talk about shadows, voices, and things moving. On top of that, it was a dangerous set where multiple people were injured, including Linda Blair, who fractured her spine.
"Psycho" (1960)
Another cursed set with strange occurrences was "Psycho." Funny that almost all films with curses and haunting stories are horror! Apparently, while filming certain scenes, the crew remembers feeling a cold, chilling breeze. Maybe it was their imagination. Or maybe it was something more sinister.
"The Conqueror" (1956)
It's hard to say if the set of "The Conqueror" was cursed or just doomed by poor choices. This 1956 film was shot near nuclear testing sites in Utah. Decades later, about 41% of crew members developed cancer, and 21% died from it. Honestly, this was just a terrible tragedy.
"The Conjuring" (2013)
"The Conjuring" was another film with a haunted set and stages. So, what did the cast and crew experience? According to interviews, they reported hearing strange animal noises, seeing shadows, and feeling cold, unexplained breezes even on hot days. Vera Farmiga, who played Loraine, also saw some strange things. While researching her character at home after seeing the script, she saw three long scratch marks on her computer.
"The Poltergeist" Franchise
Have you heard of the "Poltergeist" curse? It's the belief that the franchise is cursed and haunted, as there have been multiple deaths and accidents, including those of Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne. O'Rourke passed away at just 12 years old on February 1, 1988, after suffering cardiac arrest. Dominique Dunne also passed away tragically young. She was strangled by John Thomas Sweeney, her obsessive and jealous lover, and passed on November 4, 1982, at 22.
"The Possession" (2012)
Cast and crew on "The Possession" believe the creepy nature of the movie translates to real life. The movie set was supposedly cursed with loads of bad luck. In one instance, while director Ole Bornedal was standing under a light, the bulb exploded. Also, just days after filming was wrapped up, all the props burned down. Talk about spooky.
"The Omen" (1976)
So many tragedies happened while filming for "The Omen," enough for some crew to wonder if the set/film was cursed. For instance, lightning hit a plane with the lead actor. Actually, a few weeks later, another plane with an executive producer of the film was struck too. Two more times later, lightning affected "The Omen's" cast and crew four times! They were also attacked by baboons. The creepiest and most tragic incident related to this film, though, was a devastating car accident. On August 13, 1976, which was also Friday the 13th, Liz Moore and John Richardson got into a car accident, which decapitated Moore.
"The Amityville Horror" (2005)
"The Amityville Horror" isn't just a freaky film. It was also a bizarre filming experience with the strangest incidents. One of the stranger things was when filming at the boathouse, a body was found in the water. Interestingly, the crew must have been connected, as many woke up around 3 a.m. on filming days. Creepy!
"The Nun" (2018)
There is just something so spooky about nuns all dressed up and walking in the dark. That wasn't the scariest part, though, about filming "The Nun," which was released in 2018. Oh no, the freakiest part was all the strange events. The director of the film, Corin Hardy, didn't shy away from telling his paranormal stories surrounding filming. In one instance, he stepped into a cell room while filming and swore he saw two men at the back of the room. He assumed they were crew, but when he looked up after filming the sequence to ask how they felt about the shot, no one was there. Did anyone else get goosebumps reading that?
"The Wizard of Oz" (1939)
Did you think you'd see this classic film on our list? Well, "The Wizard of Oz" set is surrounded by a lot of rumors that it's cursed or haunted. This is because of the rumor that a munchkin hung himself while filming, which some people say you can see in the background. Truth? Eh. According to sources that debunked and analyzed the film, it was likely a bird.
"Rosemary’s Baby" (1968)
Another haunted/cursed movie set is "Rosemary's Baby." Some people say the film is cursed, and it blends into the lives of the filmmakers and crew. During the same year the movie was released, the director's wife, Sharon Tate, was brutally killed by members of the Manson Family. She was eight and a half months pregnant at the time. Another death attributed to the film was composer Krzysztof Komeda, who fell off a cliff in 1968. He fell into a coma for four months and sadly, never woke up.
"Annabelle" (2014)
"Annabelle" is based on a true story, although the actual doll looks entirely different. Also, not everyone agrees it's haunted. Still, some cast and crew members after filming "Annabelle" alleged the doll from the movie was haunted. They remember hearing loud noises on quiet sets and objects were moved out of place by a mysterious person (or force). What do you think? Even if the doll isn't haunted, it sure is creepy.
"Twilight Zone: The Movie" (1983)
"Twilight Zone: The Movie" was plagued with tragedies from the start, beginning with the infamous helicopter crash. On July 23, 1982, a helicopter crashed into the Indian Dunes, killing three people and injuring six others. The three people who passed were on the ground during the accident and were stars: Vic Morrow, Myca Dinh Le, and Renee Shin-Yi Che. Because of their tragic deaths, the crew labeled the set and movie as haunted and cursed. Could you blame them?
"The House of the Devil" (2009)
Also on our list is "The House of the Devil," which was so haunted that the director came back to the hotel where the crew/cast stayed and filmed another movie. Although it wasn't the set, this film and the hotel, Yankee Pedlar Inn, deserve a mention.
"The Innkeepers" (2011)
How can this movie not make our list when it was inspired by truly spooky hauntings while filming for "The House of the Devil?" Not only was "The Innkeepers filmed in the haunted Yankee Pedlar Inn, but it also names it. It's rare to find a film that is both filmed and set in the same location. Would you be brave enough to stay a night or film a movie in the historic Yankee Pedlar Inn? It's been around since 1891.
