Atlantic hurricane season stretches from June 1 through November 30. Typically, the most active months are from August to October. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2024 is set to be an above-average hurricane season, which means residents along the Southeast Coast will be preparing for the inevitable, just as they have in the past when they faced the top 15 most catastrophic storms in American history.

Although many years come and go with hurricanes that barely register on the barometric pressure meters, other times, all factors line up perfectly from the ocean temperature to the eyewall structure to create the perfect storm. By definition, a hurricane or a cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system featuring a low-pressure center. Along with this comes strong winds, atmospheric circulation, heavy rains, and squalls.

To compile a list of the most catastrophic storms in American history, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of historical, weather, and news publications including CBS News, the National Hurricane Center, and Reuters. We then selected storms in U.S. history that caused considerable damage as well as death tolls in the hundreds. After that, we confirmed aspects of each storm incident using sites like WeatherUnderground. (For other natural disasters, explore the 20 most powerful earthquakes in history.)
