Catastrophic Weather Events That Devastated the US

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 to November 30. At the start of the 2025 season, forecasters at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted a 60% chance of an above-normal season, with 13–19 named storms, 6–10 hurricanes, and 3–5 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher), driven by warmer-than-average Atlantic waters and conducive atmospheric conditions.

Residents in the Atlantic basin have grown accustomed to preparing for storm activity but it never gets easier. They must remain alert for potential catastrophic weather events, similar to those the region has faced in the past that devastated areas in the US. Each hurricane season brings its own surprises, with no way to predict exactly how weather patterns will unfold. Some years produce only weak systems that barely make a dent in the pressure charts, while in others, ocean warmth, wind shear, and storm structure align just right to generate powerful, destructive hurricanes.

To compile a list of the most catastrophic weather events that devastated the US, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of historical, weather, and news publications including CBS News, the National Hurricane Center, and Reuters. We then selected storms in U.S. history that caused considerable damage as well as death tolls in the hundreds. After that, we confirmed aspects of each storm incident using sites like WeatherUnderground. (For other natural disasters, explore the 20 most powerful earthquakes in history.)

This post was updated on November 4, 2025 to clarify predictions for 2025, as well as the year of the Chenière Caminanda hurricane.
