23 Incredible Photos of Before, During, and After the Strongest Storms in History

Many storms have completely devastated regions of the world. Even though there have been many catastrophic storms in recent history, some of the deadliest storms happened over a hundred years ago. The Galveston Hurricane, which hit Galveston, Texas, in 1900, is still considered the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States.

In 1900, technology wasn't as advanced as it is nowadays, making it difficult for them to predict how severe the storm would be. At the time, the United States Weather Bureau (today the National Weather Service) was in charge of monitoring the weather, but this agency had only been around for 10 years.

Hurricane science didn't become more advanced until about 40 years after the Galveston hurricane. While the exact number of fatalities from the Galveston hurricane is uncertain, the estimate from the National Hurricane Center is that it killed around 8,000 people.

Even when meteorologists can accurately predict the severity of a storm, it doesn't always prevent fatalities or extensive damage. When a storm is on the way, not every person has the ability to evacuate and some people choose not to leave their homes.

With the 2024 hurricane season underway, it's important to look back at some of the most severe storms in history. These images give us a glimpse into what it was like before, during, and after some of the strongest storms. (After this article, check out the wildly destructive storms that flattened entire cities.)

To give a depiction of what it was like before, during, and after some of the biggest storms in history, 24/7 Tempo consulted sources such as History.com.
