Weather is usually fairly predictable, as it's supposed to be. There's a whole field of science dedicated to predicting the weather and at this point, advances in technology have made it pretty dependable; if the weather forecast says it will rain, it likely will rain. But sometimes, weather events transpire that leave even the most seasoned meteorologists scratching their heads.

If we're lucky, we'll go through life without ever experiencing a truly catastrophic weather event. Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, extreme temperatures, windstorms, and other "acts of God" have the potential to completely uproot our lives in ways we can't even imagine. Houses can be destroyed, belongings can be swept away, and lives can be lost.

While major weather events like these used to be rare, they're unfortunately becoming more and more common due to global climate change. "One-hundred-year floods" used to be called that because there was only a 1-in-100 chance of it happening in any given year, but Houston got hit with three 500-year floods in three years: 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Not every extreme weather event – like volcanic eruptions – is tied to climate change, but as time goes on, it's going to affect us more and more — even those of us who live outside of areas typically affected by extreme weather. For example, Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, a part of the world that doesn't usually see hurricanes, head-on in 2012.

Strange and anomalous weather events have happened since the dawn of time, and they're certainly not going to slow down. Mother Nature is undeniably powerful, occasionally terrifying, and incredibly unpredictable. These are some of the strangest weather events ever recorded. Some were so extreme that they even changed the course of history.
