New York Yankee great Yogi Berra is famous for saying "It ain't over 'til it's over." This sums up life – and sports – perfectly. We don't always come out on top, whether it's injury or something more serious that holds us back, but there are opportunities to rise again. Many athletes have done just that and shown us how their determination and perseverance can lead to a remarkable comeback story.

Everyone loves a comeback, whether it's an individual athlete or a team, and many of us root for the underdog. Sometimes, it doesn't work out, like with Yankee great Don Mattingly. An all-star when his team was off their game, he finally saw victory in sight when the Yankees rallied during the 1994 season and were on track to take it all. The remainder of the season was canceled by then-MLB commissioner Bud Selig. Mattingly retired without a World Series ring.

Other times, it works out phenomenally. To compile a list of remarkable comeback stories in sports history, 24/7 Tempo consulted ESPN, and other sports websites, as well as general-interest sources including the New York Times and The Guardian. This list isn't comprehensive but is meant as a tribute to certain individual athletes and teams who have delivered astonishing performances in their fields, making history in the process. (These are the 40 most successful athletes of the 21st century.)

Here are remarkable comeback stories of fallen athletes.
