As the most-watched event in American sports, the Super Bowl brings diehard fans on an emotional rollercoaster. For supporters who deeply invest in the NFL teams reaching the championship game, victory sparks euphoric celebrations while defeat plunges them into profound disappointment. In some years, the Super Bowl ranks as the most-viewed television broadcast overall. The hyper-investment of fans makes the outcome massively magnified - whether their team wins it all or agonizingly falls short.

With the 58th Super Bowl, or if you prefer Super Bowl LVIII,  fast approaching, 24/7 Tempo has put together a list of the saddest Super Bowl losses in NFL history. We based our list on the closeness of the games, the number of lead changes, and the historical significance of the results.

For years, the Super Bowl faced criticism for delivering boring, lopsided games. This rang especially true in the 1980s, when high-powered offenses like the 49ers' "West Coast" attack fueled blowout victories, averaging a margin of 22 points per game - the highest of any decade.

Yet many Super Bowls still came down to the wire. Our list includes 18 games decided by seven points or fewer, with the winner emerging in the final seconds in 12 of them. Sixteen were won in the fourth quarter, bringing last-minute elation for one side and heartbreak for the other. Despite its reputation, the Super Bowl has often produced down-to-the-wire thrillers and shocking finishes.

The New England Patriots have been the most frequent visitors to the Super Bowl with 11 appearances. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for victories with six. Five of the Patriots' wins have been by six points or fewer. Their wildest win was in Super Bowl LI in 2017 when they extinguished a 28-9 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth quarter and won in overtime. Patriots fans were deflated at Super Bowl XLII in 2008. New England was on the cusp of NFL history by trying to become only the second team to go undefeated. But the underdog New York Giants shocked them, 17-14. (Here is a list of the team that waited the longest to win a Super Bowl.)
