The Most Crushing Defeats in Baseball History

Sports are deeply ingrained in American culture, and a large percentage of the population actively participates in sports activities, whether as members of the viewing public or as participants. Starting at a young age, from little league baseball and moving through to minor and major league play, baseball, a game historically referred to as America's pastime, is one of the more popular sports, a game enjoyed nationwide.

Many of us live up to the name fan, becoming true fanatics, becoming so enthralled with our favorite teams that we often experience the joy of their wins and the agony of their defeats. No one likes to lose, and when many of our favorite baseball teams and players experience the most crushing defeats, it resonates with all of us.

To compile a list of the most crushing defeats in baseball history, 24/7 Tempo reviewed the worst of both worlds: the one-off games that teams lost by an embarrassingly, historically wide margin, as well as the games that dashed dreams of glory in a fashion so devastating it was downright era-defining.

This post was updated on October 31, 2025 to clarify that the Chicago Colts played under the National League back in 1897, as well as the founding date of Major League Baseball.
