When many of us think of legendary baseball players, names like Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, and Babe Ruth always spring up. These athletes dominated the game, propelling the New York Yankees to iconic status as one of the greatest teams in baseball. But these players weren't the only legendary players in the game.

Baseball has evolved significantly since the days of the Great Bambino. The level of play is extraordinarily higher than it was even 25 years ago. Yet, certain players are beyond reproach. Whether they started playing in the 1890s or the 1990s, there's no denying that certain players are stars in their field.

To make it in baseball takes extremely hard work, dedication, and exceptional talent. But even that doesn't always guarantee a trip to the major leagues. Of all high school seniors playing ball, approximately one in 200 (that's 0.5 percent) will be drafted. But getting there is only the start of it. To remain, a player needs to constantly work at improving his game.

Out of the approximately 20,000 players who have ever donned Major League Baseball uniforms, only 273 of them have performed on a level high enough to earn them a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame grants you an automatic pass as a legendary baseball player.

To determine legendary baseball players who dominated the sport, 24/7 Tempo factored in every stat including home runs, lifetime batting average, Gold Gloves, RBIs, ERA, and achievements like no-hitters for pitchers. We also considered each baseball player's influence on the game itself.

If you're a baseball fan, then you already know that these 20 players are up there with the greatest of all time. While many of them are no longer around, some of them are still relatively young. A few might even be the greatest baseball player from the year you were born.
