Across the United States, historic districts offer a window into the country’s past, preserving architecture, streetscapes, and neighborhoods that have stood the test of time. From cobblestone streets and centuries-old row houses to grand mansions and carefully restored town centers, these areas capture the character and craftsmanship of earlier eras while remaining vibrant parts of modern cities.
More than just visually striking, historic districts tell the stories of the communities that built them. They reflect regional styles, cultural influences, and moments in history that shaped the nation. The districts on this list stand out not only for their beauty, but for how thoughtfully they balance preservation with everyday life.
To determine America’s most charming historic neighborhoods, 24/7 Tempo reviewed district listings from the National Register of Historic Places and five-year data on home value from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Historic districts registered in the NRHP were ranked based on the average home value of owner-occupied housing units within their boundaries.
District-level average home values were aggregated from the census tract level using spatial boundary definitions from the NRHP and the U.S. Census Bureau. Data on median home age is also from the U.S. Census Bureau. Only historic districts with at least 50 housing units were considered.
