The business of robbing banks was once considered a lucrative – albeit illegal – enterprise with many heists bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time when the average salary was less than 1,000 per year. Career criminals like George Leslie, touted as America's most prolific bank robber of the 1800s, amassed seven million (200 million today) over his lifetime. Heists like his have been occurring in the U.S. since the late 18th century when America's first bank robbery occurred. The most infamous bank robberies in history show us that the years may have changed but criminals remain the same.

Many perpetrators have gotten much more innovative with their methods and targets. Some of the biggest thefts have occurred not just from banks but from safety deposit centers, armored vehicles, cargo depots, and even hotels. When it comes to money, thieves will follow the money and have developed several techniques to gain access to bank vaults and other areas of riches. The most common method appears to be tunneling underneath the target site, then breaking or blasting through floors or walls to gain access to the goods.

To compile a list of the most infamous bank robberies in history, 24/7 Tempo referred to present-day and historical news articles as well as educational websites like History.com and WorldAtlas.com. We focused on robberies of cash and other valuables taken mostly from banks, armored vehicles, and safety deposit centers. Art heists and home and train robberies were omitted. (Here's a look at the most famous unsolved mysteries in FBI history.)

Stolen amounts are estimates and were adjusted for inflation based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index for 2023 — except in the case of the Manhattan Savings Institution robbery of 1878 since the BLS Index dates only from 1913. In that case, we used the inflation calculator published by the Official Data Foundation, which collects and processes government data.
