Though disbanding these unforgettable figures was heartbreaking for fans, their music lives on. They remain rock 'n' roll icons despite their breakups.

It's always surprising to see such notable faces on screen, listen to their hit songs, and realize the contrast between what was presented to the public and what was going on behind the scenes. Fleetwood Mac thrived professionally as a band in 1977 but the discord between members only fueled their inevitable breakup.

Fame can be disorienting enough but adding sex and drugs to the mix led to multiple explosive situations for the band members. Despite the chaos emerging between members, including infidelity, they managed to produce music that still lives on today. Stevie Nicks told Rolling Stone then, "People will really enjoy listening to what happened since the last album," sharing that the songs she wrote were all about the inter-band drama.

Axl Rose is credited for his immense talent but he's also credited for the band's eventual break up. As with many rock 'n' roll bands, drug use is very much a part of the lifestyle. With Rose's drug and alcohol-fueled erratic behavior, he was unable to manage the band correctly. In 1990, a severe heroin addiction caused the band to let their original drummer, Steven Adler go. It wasn't just addiction that infiltrated the band but also the exhaustion that comes with such a demanding tour schedule.

To keep the music going, Rose brought on a new guitarist but unfortunately, that only deepened the creative differences between members of the band. Recording sessions became uncomfortably tense and eventually, the band members felt helpless. Although they broke up in 1986, they still managed a reunion tour which proved impressively lucrative.

While some bands chose to keep their internal drama to themselves, other band members, like those in The Police, were unafraid to take their dirty laundry and make it public. The disagreements between Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers were frequent. They didn't have the most stable of tempers. With so much success, they also dealt with one another's inflated egos. Ultimately, Sting wanted to go solo and leave the other two members behind.

The notion of the band breaking up was not kept secret. Although their manager tried to keep things under wraps, he could not control the comments made to the press by the band members. They performed together, putting on unforgettable performances but continued to grow apart. Sting's decision to continue evolving led him elsewhere but he reunited with Summers and Copeland for a world tour in 2007. This was the last time they would perform together.

Beatlemania took the world by storm and with mounting pressure, the band experienced a series of difficulties. Touring alone rendered them dog-tired while creative differences emerged. Paul McCartney's more organized nature meant he was perceived as arrogant and bossy. On the other hand, John Lennon had a much more laid-back approach to music-making.

The songwriting partnership between the two was affected, but it wasn't just their respective approaches to the creative process that put a strain on the band. Lennon's relationship with Yoko Ono affected the band's dynamic and later, loss and grief overpowered the members. Once their manager passed away, The Beatles was over.

American rock band, Nirvana, integrated well into the grunge scene but their talent forced their sound into mainstream audiences, and from there, their success skyrocketed. Fame is a beast in and of itself and paired with an addiction battle, frontman Kurt Cobain couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Their music resonated with millions with themes of social alienation blaring through the speakers at each of their concerts.

Though Cobain made attempts to recover, he couldn't stick it out and checked himself out of a drug rehab facility without informing anyone. There were certainly tumultuous moments among band members, but it was ultimately Cobain's tragic death by suicide that led to Nirvana's disbandment.

The Smashing Pumpkins saw worldwide success, selling over 30 million albums. However, personal tensions and creative differences cracked the foundation of their success. Frontman Billy Corgan attempted to keep a tight ship but drug use had infiltrated the band and their dynamic changed. Their fanbase was dedicated and their music was celebrated but Corgan was unable to see the band through its next phase.

Exhaustion took over and the creative differences only worsened, resulting in the dissolution of the band. They followed through with a farewell tour, which their fanbase appreciated, and Corgan announced The Smashing Pumpkins would be no longer. Each of the members went their separate ways to pursue their respective passion projects. Despite the split, they managed to reunite in various ways but the tensions that caused the band breakup remain a part of their story.

Led Zeppelin's style was well defined by drummer, John Bonham's sound. When he passed tragically, the band was left scrambling from grief and the realization that the band's original sound could never be reproduced. They had already been dealing with mounting pressures, including a tour schedule all band members found exhausting.
