Most Americans Can’t Answer These Basic Credit Score Questions

Credit scores play a central role in modern financial life, influencing everything from mortgage rates to credit card approvals. But despite their importance, many Americans still don't fully understand how credit scores work or what factors affect them. That knowledge gap can lead to costly mistakes and missed financial opportunities.

The modern credit scoring system dates back to 1956, when Bill Fair and Earl Isaac founded Fair, Isaac and Company, now known as FICO. Their model introduced a standardized, data-driven way to evaluate borrowers, replacing earlier methods that often relied on subjective and sometimes discriminatory judgments. Today, credit scores are a key part of the financial system. In this slideshow, we break down common credit score questions and explain what you need to know to better understand and manage your credit.
