66 Countries That Were Once Part of the British Empire

At its height, the British Empire stretched so far across the globe that it was often said "the sun never sets" on its territories. By the early 20th century, Britain controlled vast regions on nearly every continent, shaping cultures, economies, and governments around the world.

After World War II, however, many of these territories began to gain independence, marking a major shift in global power. In this slideshow, we take a look at the countries that were once part of the British Empire, along with when they became sovereign nations.
