24 Celebrity Chefs Before They Became Household Names

Celebrity chefs tend to look like they were born with a cookbook deal, a restaurant empire, and their own television show. Most of them were not. Some started washing dishes, working bakery counters, writing restaurant reviews, or cooking in somebody else's kitchen for years before anyone knew their names.

The paths are all over the place. Julia Child did not seriously learn to cook until adulthood. Ina Garten left a government job to buy a specialty food store despite having no professional food experience. Guy Fieri sold pretzels as a kid, while Anthony Bourdain's restaurant career began at the bottom of the kitchen ladder. Here are 24 famous chefs and food personalities, how they got started, and what became of the careers that followed.
