Many U.S. cities are known for their outstanding cuisine, from New York City and San Francisco to Los Angeles and Chicago, cities where restaurants like Eleven Madison Park, Golden Unicorn, Nightbird, and Uka offer diners outstanding cuisine from award-winning chefs in top-notch settings. But these locales aren’t the only places that offer incredible food.
Kansas City, Missouri, known for jazz music, barbecue, and the Kansas City Chiefs, has excellent dining options, and its food scene goes far beyond the typical BBQ brisket. The “City of Fountains” is home to several upscale restaurants that serve a variety of international cuisines, from French to German, that rival other big cities restaurants in quality. These six local spots are definitely worth visiting.
This post was updated on October 3, 2025 to remove Affäre (due to closure) and update the new leadership at Novel, as well as to add Kata Nori and Fox and Pearl.
Fox and Pearl

You can’t go wrong with Fox and Pearl, an upscale restaurant led by esteemed Chef Vaughn Good (In 2020, he was the James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef: Midwest). While not entirely straying from classics like smoked pork, the menu offers unique and innovative options, like blue cheese, apple, and walnut sausage! The aesthetic is ultra date night-friendly, featuring plenty of mood lighting and two beautiful bars offering different vibes: the main bar is spacious, while the downstairs spot offers a warmer, more intimate feel. Menu items are on the high end, but your meal will be well worth the price tag.
Café Provence

Café Provence is an exquisite French restaurant in Kansas City. As a family-owned restaurant, Café Provence has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Restaurants in the country, one of the Top 10 French Restaurants in the U.S., and as the Best Restaurant in Kansas City.
At Café Provence, reservations are highly recommended. They partner with local farmers and suppliers to bring the freshest local ingredients to their cuisine. Throughout each day of the week, you can stop by to enjoy their regular lunch and dinner menu. However, on Tuesday, they offer the Tuesday Prix Fixe.
The Tuesday Prix Five is a seasonally inspired 4-course menu that includes dishes like parmesan risotto croquettes and Corvino bass with saffron potatoes. You can also find numerous delicious dishes on their traditional dinner menu, such as the rabbit and chorizo gnocchi with roasted corn and heirloom tomato cream sauce.
Novel Restaurant

Their regular dinner menu includes dishes such as the beef sirloin tartare with wasabi tofu, roasted beets, and soy shallots. Or you can choose something vegetarian, such as the mushroom ravioli with fava beans and lemon pangrattato.
Kata Nori

We dare you to find a better Kansas City sushi spot. Kata Nori is way more than your average sushi joint, specializing in hand rolls prepared by a team of sushi itamae (chefs who have spent years mastering the art of sushi creation). The well-loved establishment offers delightfully crunchy seaweed and high-quality fish in its signature hand rolls. The crudos are also a spectacular menu item, often paired with complimentary sauces. If it’s Japanese food you’re craving, put Kata Nori at the top of your list.
Le Fou Frog

Even though this family-owned restaurant identifies itself as an unpretentious eatery, you’ll find the level of luxury in each dish on par with the other fine dining restaurants in Kansas City. Le Fou Frog serves distinguished French cuisine in a cozy, friendly atmosphere.
Le Fou Frog has been open since 1996 and combines the elegant cuisine of France with the luxury of New York City. When you dine at Le Fou Frog, you’ll find yourself relaxing as soon as you walk in the door and take in the soft lighting and cozy, charming tables.
Aside from the warm atmosphere of Le Fou Frog, you’ll also taste some of the best French cuisine you’ve ever had. You can experience dishes like the bisque de homard, a rich lobster soup cooked with Cognac, rice, tomato paste, and a dash of cayenne. There are also numerous desserts and drinks available, whether you choose a classic dessert like the creme brûlée or the profiterole, a pastry topped with dark chocolate sauce, almonds, and vanilla ice cream.
Gram & Dun

Whether you choose a relaxing meal at an inside table or enjoy the cozy patio outdoors, Gram & Dun fulfills the balance between comfort food and fine dining. At Gram & Dun, they consider the restaurant a place for the people, and the atmosphere is meant to mimic the comfort of a neighborhood bistro.

The classic flavors of Kansas City barbecue shine through the menu at Gram & Dun, with entrees such as the shrimp & grits with jalapeno avocado gravy and micro cilantro or the fried oysters with cornflake breading, romesco sauce, and pistachio & olive salsa.
