17 Things That Feel Like Opening a Time Capsule From the ’70s

Growing up in the ’70s meant living in a world that feels almost unrecognizable now. There were no smartphones, no laptops, no social media, and no endless streaming menus. Most families had a few TV channels, one landline phone, and a lot more time that was not planned, tracked, or interrupted by screens.

For kids, that often meant a kind of freedom that would surprise many parents today. You rode bikes around the neighborhood, stayed outside until dinner, and knew it was time to head home when the streetlights came on. At the same time, some everyday habits from the decade look shocking in hindsight, especially when it comes to car seats, seat belts, playgrounds, and the much looser safety rules of the era.

To revisit the moments that defined childhood in that decade, 24/7 Tempo looked at memorable ’70s experiences and nostalgia-focused sources, including Things Boomers Like. These are the things that still take ’70s kids right back.
