The 1800s can feel impossibly distant, but these photographs make the era a little easier to picture. Life was often physically demanding, workdays were long, and many families lived with few of the comforts we now take for granted. Still, daily life also had its quieter moments of community, celebration, and ordinary human stubbornness.

From railroad crews and fishing boats to crowded streets filled with horses instead of cars, the differences are hard to miss. So are the similarities. People worked, argued, traveled, raised families, and complained about traffic. The vehicles were just slower.
