Finding Ways to Stay Positive Was Crucial

From 1929 to 1941, Americans around the country experienced the horrors of the Great Depression. This was the longest downturn of the economy in American history, even until this time. While we have had dips in the economy since then, this one changed the landscape. People were without work for years, and as a result, programs were made to help people in need. Since most people can't imagine how a time like this would look, we've created this collection of images that show what rural America looked like during the Great Depression.

You'll see many different images in this collection. Many of them are of people struggling to make a living. There are images of folks standing in the unemployment line, others traveling to find work, and some who are working for many of the government programs that were created to help people in need at that time. On top of the financial struggles, there was also many environmental issues, including dust storms and droughts. There are various images here of people who had to leave their homes and travel somewhere else because the conditions just weren't livable anymore. Finally, you'll see how the wives and children of many men were affected in these dire times.

There's a lot to take in with these images, and they will likely make you think differently about your life today. To tell you about what life was like during the Great Depression, 24/7 Tempo reviewed many historical sources, including History.com, Federal Reserve History, and The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. We also reviewed images provided by Getty Images. Altogether, it's a pretty amazing collection.
