A soundtrack can really make or break a movie. Often, movies aren't the same without the background music and we don't always even notice it. For this article, 24/7 Tempo consulted various entertainment websites including Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Click through the slideshow to discover 10 times movie soundtracks outshone the film itself. Note: just because a movie makes this list, doesn't mean it's a bad film. It just wouldn't be the same without its incredible soundtrack.
"Titanic" (1997)
"Titanic" is a great movie, but would it still be as good with a different soundtrack? Many people, even those who've never seen the film, know the song "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion. The movie was successful, but the soundtrack alone sold over 27 million copies.
"Purple Rain" (1984)
"Purple Rain" is an iconic film that would not be the same without its soundtrack. This rock-drama musical was a box office hit, earning over $70 million on a budget of just $7.2 million. The soundtrack/original score of "Purple Rain" stole the show, earning multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
"Tron: Legacy" (2010)
"Tron: Legacy" didn't do great. It wasn't an absolute flop, but the reviews aren't stellar. On Rotten Tomatoes, "Tron: Legacy" sits at 64% on the Popcornmeter. Still, people love the film's soundtrack which features various genres like electric and orchestra.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014)
"Guardians of the Galaxy" is a fantastic movie alone, but let's be honest – a big reason so many people love this movie and franchise is the music. The first film in the franchise featured a soundtrack with various 70s hits. The soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
"Batman Forever" (1995)
Like "Tron: Legacy," the movie "Batman Forever" didn't do so well. It isn't the highest-rated Batman movie, but the soundtrack holds a place in many people's hearts. Hit songs within this soundtrack are "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" and "Kiss from a Rose."
"The Great Gatsby" (2013)
Another time a movie soundtrack outshone its movie is in the film "The Great Gatsby." This film, released in 2013, had a modern soundtrack with songs like "Young and Beautiful" and "Crazy in Love."
"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" (2009)
The Twilight franchise has always had incredible soundtracks, and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" is no exception. The soundtrack of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" featured songs like "Meet Me on the Equinox" and "No Sound but the Wind."
"The Bodyguard" (1992)
Any movie or soundtrack with Whitney Houston is bound to be a hit. This is the case for the soundtrack in "The Bodyguard." In 1992, the movie was nominated for two Academy Awards – one for "I Have Nothing" and the other for "Run to You."
"The Crow" (1994)
"The Crow" is a great movie, but really stands out for its soundtrack and use of rock songs. The Stone Temple Pilots won an MTV Award for Best Song within the film (Big Empty). Big artists were used for the film, including Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, and The Cure.
"Dirty Dancing" (1987)
Last but not least is the soundtrack of "Dirty Dancing." How good would this movie really be without its incredible and catchy soundtrack? "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," one of the most iconic songs in the film, won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
