Have you noticed the sudden rise and love of matcha tea? Although it has suddenly grown popular in the last few months, it has a long and rich history. This creamy and vibrant tea is delicious, but why is it so well-loved? Click through to find out the 10 reasons matcha is the most popular tea of 2025.
What is Matcha?
It's hard to imagine that the vibrant green powder used to make matcha tea is natural. But it is! Matcha is a finely ground shade-grown tea leaf. This delicious ingredient originates from China and Japan. It dates back to at least the 11th century, as that is when pressed and powdered tea was growing in popularity. China introduced matcha (although it didn't go by this name yet) to Japan during the Song Dynasty.
10 Reasons Matcha is the Most Popular Tea of 2025
Although matcha has been around for over a thousand years, it's really growing popular worldwide in 2025. Why is that?
1. Vibrant Color
Matcha is a vibrant, bright green, making it one of the prettiest natural tea colors. It is also rich in flavor and excellent to photograph because of its vibrancy.
2. Celebrities and Influencers
Is it surprising to see that a big reason so many people are gaining interest in matcha tea is influencers and celebrities? Across all social media platforms, people are consuming matcha. When you see this all the time, it's easy to get influenced to try it. It's also a lot more accessible and found in many coffee shops.
3. Delicious Cold and Hot
Matcha is also very versatile. Sure, you can drink it as a hot tea, but it can also be made iced. Have you ever heard about matcha cake? Or matcha cheesecake? Matcha is a popular flavor in deserts.
4. High in Antioxidants
Matcha also has a lot of health benefits and nutrients. However, it's always best to talk with your doctor before trying anything new for your health. A big plus to drinking matcha is that it is filled with antioxidants. For the health benefits in the rest of this slideshow, we'll be using information from Healthline. So, why is it filled with antioxidants? Matcha contains catechins that act as natural antioxidants.
5. Liver Protection
Also, according to Healthline, matcha may help protect your liver. A few studies have revealed that drinking green tea, especially matcha, decreases your risk of liver disease.
6. Energy
Matcha has a lot of caffeine, at least compared to other types of tea. Overall, it's about 19–44 mg of caffeine per gram of matcha, but this completely depends on the leaves. Drinking matcha tea can boost your energy and keep you from feeling tired because of the caffeine. However, too much caffeine can harm you.
7. Memory
Not only does matcha have antioxidants, but it's also great for your brain. It can help with your memory and enhance brain function.
8. Possible Cancer Prevention
As stated earlier, always talk with your doctor about any concerns or new foods/health products. Still, some research studies do link matcha with lowering the risk of getting cancer. Matcha contains a high amount of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which has been studied and shown to potentially reduce the risk of some cancers.
9. Healthy Heart
Healthline also noted that matcha tea may help promote heart health. Experts aren't entirely certain about this, though, as studies have only really been conducted on regular green tea. Green tea and matcha tea have similar components, so some experts believe the results would be the same.
10. Weight Loss
The last reason matcha tea is on the rise in popularity in 2025 is because it can aid in weight loss. Matcha has components that can boost your metabolism, aiding you in your weight loss journey.
